I researched plenty and found this model is well liked, reliable and are easy to work on. So far I have rebuilt all control linkages with oilite bronze bushings I modified on my lathe. Does the 1840 have the cab that slides ahead like the 1845C? I know on the 1845C we had where I worked the ROPS and the fenders all slid ahead and made access to most of the parts pretty easy. As I recall the boom had to be raised up and supported with the safety support. Just checked and the 1845C was a 1989 so it is older than your 1840.
The starter motor on this CASE 1840 isn't turning over - it just clicks. In order to gain access to the starter, the manual says to raise the arms, lock them, then slide the cab forward. The problem is, without the motor running, we can't raise the arms. Does anyone know how to access the starter when the engine is dead? I’ve been working on our 97’ case 1840 skid steer - it has 3200hrs but has had very poor maintenance from previous mechanics. My initial problem was a very very bad hydraulic leak that resulted in removing the tandem hydraulic pump and all hydraulic hoses - the hoses were in very rough shape so got them rebuilt.
I've got a 1992 case 1840, this is an early one that does not have the fiberglass covers over all the drive cogs on top of the chain cases. I recently had the wheel bearings go bad on the left front axle housing. Taking it apart and replacing the bearings was pretty easy and straight forward, but putting it back together was a huge PAIN.
